Water Outages In County Limerick

January 13th, 2010

Limerick County Council says it is continuing to repair burst water pipes in various parts of the County.

The local authority is urging customers to conserve water to the maximum extent possible but added that interruptions in supply were inevitable over the coming days.

The Council has confirmed there is a water outage in Herbertstown at present as a result of burst pipes.  Parts of Ballylanders and Kilfinane also have no water following a drop in reservoir levels. Elsewhere, water will be turned off during today in housing estates in Caherconlish and Oola while services to schools and businesses will be maintained where possible.

Further water outages will occur tonight in order to allow reservoirs recover in some areas. Affected areas will include Caherconlish, Doon Reservoir, Pallasgreen and Oola.

According to Mr. Donal Brennan, Senior Engineer, Limerick County Council: “At the moment water supplies around the county are subject to periodic interruptions. Water pipes have burst at various locations in recent days and other such incidences will occur as the thaw continues.”

“Council crews are continuing their efforts to maintain supplies and the public are asked to promptly repair any leaks within their premises.  We will continue to ensure that disruption to public water supplies is kept to a minimum and supplies are restored as soon as practicable”, he added.

Limerick County Council is advising members of the public to follow their advice should their water supply be interrupted over the coming days.  “Most premises have water storage in an attic tank and we would ask customers to use this water sparingly. Water for drinking purposes accounts for a very small proportion of water normally used in a household, for example showers, clothes washing and dishwashing. If using water from the attic tank, the advice is to boil and cool this water before drinking”, stated Mr. Brennan.

Meanwhile, Limerick County Council is continuing to provide water at static standpipes in various locations.

Water Shortages In County Limerick Worsen

January 12th, 2010

Limerick County Council has confirmed that water supplies are coming under extreme pressure as a result of burst pipe leaks and increased demand.

The Council said heavy rainfall and a rise in temperatures have led to a thaw in many parts of the County overnight and this morning. The local authority has urged customers to conserve water to the maximum extent possible but added that interruptions in supply were inevitable over the coming days.

Among the areas currently experiencing difficulties with supply are Caherconlish, Oola, Carrigmore, Doon, Newcastle West, Mountcollins, Abbeyfeale, Foynes and Ballyhahill.

According to Mr. Donal Brennan, Senior Engineer, Limerick County Council: “Customers throughout the County can expect interruptions in supply over the coming days.  Council crews are continuing their efforts to maintain supplies and the public are asked to promptly repair any leaks within their premises.  We will continue to ensure that disruption to public water supplies is kept to a minimum and supplies are restored as soon as practicable.”

Meanwhile, Limerick County Council is continuing to provide water at static standpipes in various locations.

Ennis Drinking Water Alert Is Lifted

December 17th, 2009

Ennis Town Council and Clare County Council, following consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE), have removed with immediate effect a drinking water alert that was affecting 30,000 customers of the Ennis Public Water Supply.

Following successful commissioning of the new Ennis Water Treatment Plant and consultation between Clare County Council and the HSE Mid West Area, it has been concluded that the HSE / Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) criteria for lifting the partial, precautionary boil water notice have been met.  The criteria include water quality, plant commissioning, sustainability of process and epidemiological evidence.

This precautionary boil notice, which has been in place since May 2005, was applicable to Ennis town and surrounding areas, including Clarecastle and environs, Crusheen, Barefield, Doora, Drumcliff and Spancilhill and Group Water Schemes on the supply.

Welcoming the decision to lift the drinking water alert, Mr. Tom Coughlan, Clare County Manager said: “Ennis Town Council and Clare County Council acknowledge the patience, co-operation and assistance of the general public during the period of the boil water notice and greatly regrets any inconvenience caused to householders and the business community.”

For further information contact Ennis Town Council (065-6828040), Clare County Council (065-6846337), HSE Mid West Area – Medical Queries (061-483338) or HSE Mid West Area – Local Environmental Health Department (065-6868000).

Council Seeks Removal Of Ennis Drinking Water Boil Notice

December 9th, 2009

Clare County Council has entered consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE) to lift a partial drinking water boil notice that has been in place for over four years in Ennis and surrounding areas.

The local authority confirmed that a new 9m euro water treatment plant at Drumcliffe, located on the outskirts of Ennis, is now fully operational.  All tests on the water being produced at the new plant have indicated that the water being produced is to the quality required by the Drinking Water Regulations (No. 2) of 2007.

In excess of 30,000 residents in the greater Ennis area are affected by the precautionary boil notice, which was put in place following the detection of cryptosporidium in the public water supply in May 2005.  Exhaustive testing throughout 2009 confirmed that there was no presence of cryptosporidium in the treated water that enters the Ennis public water supply.

Mr. David Timlin, Director of Services, Clare County Council, expressed optimism that the boil notice would be removed as early as possible.

“The new Ennis water treatment plant has now been fully commissioned. No major operational or production issues occurred during the new treatment plant’s thorough and wide-ranging testing period in the past five months. The treatment works has performing satisfactorily right through the severe weather conditions experienced recently and last summer. Site testing to date would indicate that there are no quality or quantity issues with the water produced. The new plant at Drumcliffe continues to produce water of the quality required by the Drinking Water Regulations (No. 2) of 2007”, he commented.

Mr. Timlin confirmed that the Council has issued a takeover certificate to EPS Ltd enabling the contractor to commence the Operate phase of the Design Build Operate (DBO) contract for the new water treatment plant.

He continued: “Full chemical parameter tests on the quality and quantity of water being produced at the plant have proven satisfactory, which is why the Council is working through very extensive protocols with the HSE to remove the partial boil notice.  There is no doubt that such a move would provide a tremendous boost for residential and commercial customers of the Ennis Public Water Supply. In the interim, however, we wish to remind consumers that the Precautionary Partial Boil Water Advice remains in place for the protection of vulnerable groups.”

Vulnerable sectors of the community include patients who are immuno-compromised, infants, pre-school children and visitors. These groups are advised to continue to boil tap water before consumption.  Institutions serving vulnerable people should also continue to boil tap water or use alternative supplies. This includes hospitals, nursing homes, crèches, pre-schools and day care centres.
