The St. Armand’s Medical Center is offering unique outpatient addiction treatment programs designed to help individuals break the grips of addiction to methamphetamine (meth), cocaine, and alcohol, and opiate based drugs. The program integrates medical, nutritional, and psychosocial therapies. Unlike traditional inpatient rehabs, the program allows people to continue their work and family relationships without a disruption.
New studies have discovered how addiction changes the brain chemistry and how it can be reversed. The most promising program for alcoholics is the PROMETA program. PROMETA begins with a brief medical treatment. This is designed to “jump-start” the recovery process by addressing one of the key reasons why people relapse – CRAVINGS. It involves just 3-5 IV therapy sessions lasting approximately 2 hours over the course of one month and is administered in a doctor’s office. The program is designed to quickly reduce cravings, anxiety, and use, while improving mood and sleep. Nutritional guidelines are also addressed to support recovery and for overall good health.
St. Armand’s Medical Center also provides psychological counseling and has a counselor on staff to help the addicted person understand how different factors in their genetics, environment, and past relationships have played a factor in the addiction. The counseling provides a critical component of the program that is not always available in medical outpatient programs.
Since 2000, when the Drug Addiction Treatment Act (DATA 2000) was passed, doctors began to treat opioid dependence on an outpatient basis. SUBOXONE was the first opoid medication approved for use in an outpatient office setting.
Opiate dependence is one of the most common addictions today, and is increasing at an alarming rate in people of all ages, ethnic groups, and educational levels. Physical dependence is associated with tolerance, and withdrawal, an adverse physiological effect that occurs when blood/tissue concentrations of the drug decline. Symptoms of withdrawal include nausea, generalized pain, sweating, headache, irritability, and shaking. Psychological dependence involves continued drug use for reasons other tha tolerance and withdrawal, such as to experience a drug’s pleasurable effects. Suboxone is not used for pain relief.
St. Armand’s Medical Center has provided medical services for 20 years in beautiful St. Armand’s Key. They provide patients with respectful, discreet, and confidential services. There is free, ample parking under the building. To find out more, please visit: www.starmandsmedicalcenter.com.

In early 2008, author Janet Bright began writing about her nearly 20 years experience with
migraines thinking her situation was unique. When she began talking
about her project, she learned that she was not alone and that many
others suffer the same difficulties or know of someone who has.
Ms. Bright has begun posting her migraine writings and research via blogpost publishing and invites all interested parties to visit www.themigrainediet.com for a look at migraine management that speaks from experience. These posts explore the relationship between foods (additives, preservatives, toxins) and migraine from a new and non-traditional perspective.
Below is an excerpt from the blog.
“…In my late twenties, as migraines became more disruptive and severe in
my life, I became desperate and began to seek answers as I wondered,”why
is this happening to me?”
I was surprised again and again by the tepid answers I received from my
General Physician and the Neurologists I visited.
At my most pessimistic, I interpreted their lack of treatment information
as disinterest, but what I have more subjectively come to understand is
that the causes of migraine are so varied that it is difficult to tell any
one person exactly what to do to make them stop. ”
How many people do you know who may benefit from a new, ‘inside’ perspective on controlling migraines?

Queensland, Australia, October, 2008 - Researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago recently linked hay fever and skin allergies to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders.
According to their report published earlier this year in Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, IBS is twice as likely to affect those with hay fever, and four times as likely to appear in people with allergic skin conditions.
IBS tends to arise in late adolescence or early adulthood, and has been related to food allergies and intolerances, particularly to wheat and dairy products, caffeine, chocolate and alcohol, all of which are known to disrupt the health of the gut and cause gut problems. The other major triggers are emotional and physical stress, which again, can lead to the over-production of stress chemicals that inflame the gut.
Symptoms disorder vary from person to person, but usually include abdominal cramping, pain and bloating, and either chronic constipation or diarrhea, or both.
Standard treatments include drugs for symptomatic relief, and avoiding the triggers. The problem is that drugs aggravate the problems in the gut, and can be dangerous. Two popular U.S. prescription medications for IBS - Lotronex and Zelnorm - were recently withdrawn after serious complications and several deaths, but have now been approved.
Lotronex is now used in Australia, albeit with restrictions, and Zelnorm has been approved as a short-term treatment of women with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Apparently, additional warnings in the drug literature have rendered these high risk drugs acceptable.
Dr. Dzung Price, Director of the Renew You Centre for Wellbeing and Longevity in Queensland, explained that IBS and its symptoms can often be controlled or relieved with natural remedies such as the herbs slippery elm, marshmallow, and chamomile, which can protect and soothe the gut lining or reduce inflammation. Probiotics (which help correct the microbe balance in the gut) have significantly improved conditions in many IBS patients, she said.
“But the only real solution for IBS is to heal the gut” said Dr. Price. “A damaged gut can lead to worsening allergies and chronic disease, and also prevents proper absorbtion of nutrients”.
Dr. Price can be contacted at www.renewyoujourney.com

A new type of supplement has just recently been released, IntelliBoost, an exciting new product that can help make tasks easier to complete.
From homework, to exams, to studying, to work, to everyday life, IntelliBoost is here to help. Many people resort to prescription drugs, caffeine drinks, and some resort to supplements. Unfortunately, prescription drugs, have side effects, are not good for the body overall, and tend to be hard to come by.
Caffeine drinks tend to be highly hazardous to one’s health, such as higher blood pressure, which results in more stress on the heart. These issues just don’t justify the end results. IntelliBoost is an all natural supplement that can give someone an energy boost, improved focus, and a general improvement of memory overtime, but the most exciting ability is the calming effect of IntelliBoost. It has the ability to relax a person and reduce stress for someone who has an important deadline or exam they are studying for, this can prove to assist with the overwhelming feelings.
For more information about IntelliBoost and its benefits go to http://www.intelliboost.com.

Prism Medical recently announced the appointment of David Minas as Chief Financial Officer. Having worked as a chartered account for nineteen years, Mr. Minas has served in a number of financial capacities, in both public as well as private companies.
So far Mr. Minas has had anything but a standard career. He has witnessed first-hand many of the challenges a company faces in its successive growth phases. Involvement in everything from starting a company from scratch, to taking another one public, completely overhauling its operations as part of a restructuring, to helping manage a company just beginning a massive growth phase that took it from $46 million in revenues to over $100 million, has prepared him well for his new role at Prism. “Having enjoyed a wealth of diverse experiences, especially recently in a fast-moving, exponential growth phase company that presented me with new challenges daily, I am confident I can handle the challenges that Prism will throw at me.”
No stranger to challenges, Mr Minas harbours a strong competitive spirit. After excelling in middle distance track and cross-country running, Mr. Minas was fortunate to represent Canada at international meets in the United States and Europe. A family man and father of two small boys, David competes in triathlons and still manages to find time to play men’s league hockey twice a week in the winter.
Not that Prism is losing its previous CFO, Miles Atkinson. Far from it. He will be staying on as the company’s Vice President of Business Development and will be focusing on acquisitions. Andrew McIntyre, Chairman and CEO of Prism had this to say: “These two appointments mean we are adding considerable strength to our financial functions, which we anticipate will contribute significantly to future growth and profitability.”

It is called a Hivamat 200® and this device delivers a patented therapy called Deep Oscillation. Manufactured by a German company Physiomed Elektromedizin AG. This therapy has been researched and developed for over 20 years but was only brought into UK in March 2007. Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Lymphatic Drainage Therapists and Equine Therapists etc are already using it with great success.
Mary Fickling of Physiopod UK Ltd (The Sole UK Distributor), introduced this product to me. She is based in Nottingham and works with her sister Julie Soroczyn, who is a Sports and Holistic Therapist. She has been using the device for 6 years, treating many sport injuries in her practice Therapeople.
I was very interested but apprehensive. It promised to accelerate wound healing, ulceration, fibrosis, swelling; everything that I combat in everyday MLD treatments. I decided to make the journey to Nottingham and meet these two ladies. I must admit it was an immediate mutual friendship from the moment I was picked up from the train station. I cannot remember how the next 3 hours passed. They showed me the 10-minute video of the device and thereafter it was “hands-on” experience.
The beauty of the device is as an MLD therapist I am using all the massage skills that I been taught. The only difference is I am applying the method with a pair of vinyl gloves. To be honest I liked the gentle vibrating sensation passing through my hands. It was very soothing and relaxing. I had a chance to receive the treatment from Julie; it was divine. I could have stayed on that couch for several hours… unfortunately, I had to catch a train back to London.
Mary and Julie were very kind to let me have the device for a trial. I borrowed the device for 2 weeks. I wanted to prove the promised results in my clinic, with my clients.
I treated the following conditions successfully with immediate results:
- Fibrosis after a skin graft of the face
- Swollen axillary and inguinal lymph nodes
- Breast fibrosis
- Secondary leg lymphoedema with very hard fibrosis
- Fibrosis, tissue protein build-up after radiotherapy
- Sinusitis and headache
- Post plastic surgery swelling of the face
- Puffy eyes
The results were amazing. In half an hour I achieved the same results as I do in 1-hour MLD. All my patients enjoyed the light vibrating sensation and the speedy results. The last 2 weeks that I used the Hivamat 200® nobody made any negative comment. I tried on my regulars, hoping that they will be the best to judge. All found it very pleasant, soothing, relaxing and more enjoyable. Even, they encouraged me to buy the product.
How does the Hivamat 200® work?
It delivers gentle electrostatic pulses to a depth of 8cm. The gentle pulses divide the negative and positively charged matter in the tissue, then compresses and pumps into the lymph system. Therefore, it clears the tissue from acid and protein built up, cytokines and waste products.
My personal judgment about this portable device is that it is a must for every MLD therapist as Ultrasound is for a Physiotherapist. The beauty of the product is, it is very safe, very well researched and there is the support of a group of scientists who are always keeping up with their new research.

The Health stream’s co-chair, Queensland Institute of Medical Research Director Professor Michael Good, told the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd that one of the big 7 ideas was the creation of a online health records service akin to FaceBook “where you can put all your data together and make it available to who ever in the population, friends, doctors or health professionals, you might want to provide that information to.”
Professor Good added “I think that’s something we feel that we can start developing straight away, certainly by 2020 it should be up and running.”
Coincidently, whilst the summit was wrapping up an Australian web site was being launched making available to all Australians the ability to securely store all their health records and access them just like Professor Good stated in his address to the Prime Minister.
MyMedicalRecords.com.au, an Australian electronic Personal Health Record (ePHR) provider, launched its web site, www.mymedicalrecords.com.au earlier this week. Australians don’t have to wait until 2020 to get their medical records and other important documents online. They can have it today. MyMedicalRecords.com.au is offering a limited number of free, 30-day trial accounts available to all Australians via the Company’s website.
Ted Wycech, the COO of MyMedicalRecords.com.au said “I couldn’t believe what I heard. I’d just landed back in Australia from the US, put on the TV and there was the Prime Minister describing our product exactly. We have this here and now. The technology has been proven over the last few years in the US and we’ve worked hard to modify the technology to specifically fit the demographics here in Australia and New Zealand.”
MyMedicalRecords in the US is considered one of the PHR market leaders with a unique service and substantial user base. They are also the technology powering MedicAlert Gold, the premium product being sold by MedicAlert in the US but who also have operations in Australia.

MyMedicalRecords.com.au, an Australian Electronic Personal Health Record provider, has launched its web site, www.mymedicalrecords.com.au. The web-based service will allow all Australians to easily and securely manage their personal health records (PHRs) and other important documents from any internet connected computer.
With MyMedicalRecords.com.au, Australians no longer have to wait to get their medical records and other important documents on line. To help Australians experience this revolutionary PHR, MyMedicalRecords.com.au is offering a limited number of free, 30-day trial account available from 21st April 2008.
MyMedicalRecords.com.au allows subscribers to: -
∑ Keep all their medical records in one easy-to-access account.
∑ Easily upload records from any number of health care providers by simply faxing to a private personal “Lifeline” telephone number (unique healthcare identifier).
∑ Each account supports up to six family members including pets.
∑ X-rays and other images can also be easily uploaded.
∑ Each account also serves as a virtual safety deposit box allowing vital documents, including insurance policies, passports, birth certificates, family photos and contracts to be securely stored, accessible only by the account holder.
In the event of an emergency, when a subscriber is unable to communicate, clinical staff can easily access selected medical records via MyMedicalRecords.com.au.
“People who have multiple points of clinical care cannot rely on every one, be it their doctors, hospitals or district nurse, to know all their medical history,” said Probir Dutt, the Head of MyMedicalRecords.com.au in Australia New Zealand. “Our service provides a secure and easy-to-use tool that allows people to take charge of all their medical records and enables healthcare providers to make better informed decisions.”
MyMedicalRecords.com.au offers the most comprehensive features of any PHR site, including secure voicemail for messages from doctors, prescription refill and appointment reminders.
The need for this was underscored by the recent bush fires, which could have destroyed thousands of records of individuals, leaving them without important legal, financial and more importantly lifesaving information.
Some big names have leant their support for this product including Buzz Aldrin, ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard and Dick Gephardt.
